Chapter Eleven

Luke unpacked his suitcase, placing his things in the drawers assigned him, marveling at how such a simple act could make him feel as if he’d come home. He’d only stayed two weeks at Callie’s apartment before his week up north, yet he’d missed this place, with its mismatched furniture and unconventional decorations. He couldn’t wait to sit on the lumpy couch to watch television, to help Callie cook dinner in her postage-stamp kitchen.

Then again, maybe he might better avoid the kitchen tonight, considering how Callie herself had done little to welcome him back. Except for pointing him in the direction of Rob’s room and stating tersely that he could put his stuff in the dresser, she’d maintained the uneasy silence that had sprung up between them in the car.

You’re here on borrowed time, mister, he muttered to himself. One false move and she’ll have you out on the street.

Her attitude still annoyed him, but he was trying to be patient and understanding, to learn how to see things from her perspective. He’d done her wrong, and there was no getting around it. To get back in her good graces, he’d have to pass her test, survive her trial by fire. Proving himself to Callie would never be easy, but perhaps it was long past time he took the first step.

He had to make plans, establish solid, concrete actions to show her he was serious about making a life here with her and their boy. That way, when he handed her the key to her farm, she’d have no doubt that he’d meant every word of his promise.

And the path to proving himself, he knew, began with his son.

As if on cue the front door opened and Rob’s youthful voice rang out, “I’m home!” A rush of emotion swept through Luke, a combination of joy and self-doubt, mixed in with his eagerness to see the boy. So anxious was he, in fact, that he rushed out of the room with a pile of shirts still in his hands.

Stepping into the living room, he found Rob hugging his mother. Watching them, Luke knew his decision to work at his marriage was the right one, the only one. Only a certified creep would consider separating this pair, even for the occasional holidays and two-week stint in the summer.

Luke set the shirts on the stand beside him, and Rob looked up suddenly. “Luke,” he cried out, wriggling free of his mother. “I didn’t know you were going to be here.”

Faced with Rob’s big, beaming smile, Luke would have cashed in his last penny to have been here for the boy from the beginning. A man could spend millions and still never get the rush, the sense of completeness, Luke got from his son’s welcome. Humbled considerably, he knew he’d been wrong to gripe about his lack of good fortune. Being hugged by Rob made Luke feel incredibly lucky.

Until he looked up and saw Callie frowning at him.

He could almost hear her thoughts.
